The Process of Printing T-Shirts
The first step is to consider what type of shirt you want for your promotion. We can source any shirt by brand, weight, or style. We work with name brand manufacturers - such as Hanes, Fruit of the Loom and Gildan. Or if you want more of a fashion fitted shirt, we can use American Apparel, Alternative Apparel and many others. Then based on your artwork, we will use the best technique to screen print it.
San Diego Digital Printing / Spot Color / Index Printing:
- Spot Color Printing is the process of printing each color with its own color ink (PMS color) on White, Light, and Dark Colored shirts. Each color is selected from a PMS Pantone Color Guide. This produces a consistent color result for company logos, trademarked images, and text. Typically spot color is used for 1-2 color graphics. The maximum number of colors that can be printed on a White/Light shirt is 14 colors; Dark shirts 13 colors + flash.
- Index Printing is the process of manually converting a 4 Color Process art file into solid spot colors. This produces a crisper, more solid look on the shirt. It also gives us more control over the colors within the graphic. Indexing an art file is very time consuming and costly, and often times results in the use of upwards of 13-14 spot colors instead of the 4 used in 4 Color Process.
- Digital Printing is the process of using a Direct-To-Garment printer, which uses a combination of heat and inks/dyes, to transfer a graphic to a garment. The result is a subdued (not vibrant) but very soft to the touch imprint. Our DTG Printer cannot print White Ink, therefore it can only be used on White or Light-Colored shirts that do not require a Flash. DTG is a great and cost-effective alternative to screen printing on very small runs of White/Light shirts. Shirts are printed manually one at a time.
